4. You call the type of training you offer "experiential". What does that mean?
Within our programmes, participants become engaged in an experience that mirrors the pressures and challenges faced in a real-world situation. In the debrief which follows, they discover powerful learning when their experiences are linked to their situations back on the job. This approach fosters an environment of accelerated learning through self-discovery and participation.
Experiential learning achieves this by:
Creating a thirst for learning
Many adult learners resist changes that require them to look at the world differently. Trainers can spend days lecturing, explaining, and coaching without making a dent in the learners' worldviews. Our business simulations can transform that resistant energy into a thirst for learning. Participants open themselves to ideas, values, and new behaviours that they would have rejected before participating in one of our simulations.
Practising skills under real world conditions
Most people can listen, negotiate, resolve conflict, coach, give directions, or be assertive in a training exercise devoid of pressure. However, to be truly effective, one must use these skills under less than perfect situations - around anger and hostility or under deadlines.
Simulations mimic real world conditions. When participants practice new behaviours and try on new attitudes under the "real world" conditions of a simulation, they gain insights that are unobtainable when listening to a lecture, viewing video, or practising an isolated skill in other training sessions.
Creating “AHA” moments
Many participants maintain the fiction that they believe "A" when their behaviour clearly shows that they believe "B." This is especially true of attitudes towards people of another race, gender, or culture. In our simulations, these contradictions of belief and behaviour are confronted and examined. This process often creates an "aha" experience that permanently changes the participants' assumptions about the world and their interactions with other people. Such experiences can literally change people's lives. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often enough.
Becoming conscious of their own competence
Participants often know more than they think they know. Our simulations help them discover the underlying principles that make them competent. These experiences help them build confidence in their ability to correct mistakes and improve their performance.
Confronting emotionally charged issues - safely
We often use symbols and metaphors in our simulations. These symbols and metaphors make it easier for participants to talk about difficult or taboo topics. For example, most employees and managers do not want to talk about power -who has it, who doesn't, how it is used in their organisation. After confronting, dissecting, and responding to the way power is used in the activity, participants are willing and eager to use the same metaphors and symbols to talk about power in their own organisations.
Enjoying the many benefits of team development quickly
Increased honesty, greater acceptance of divergent points of view, higher trust, and greater risk taking, all occur after an effective simulation of two or three hours. These benefits often take days to develop in a workshop that does not use our simulations.
Learning effectively by doing
In our simulations, participants learn by experience. Our high impact, highly involving simulations teach in hours what it would take weeks of reading and lectures to teach. Participants are actively involved in analysing and creating their own data through experience. Relevant theory is then shared, by experienced practitioners, which help to build deeper understanding of "why" their project happened like that. Making plans to build on strengths and improve performance completes the learning cycle. The style of programme allows this cycle to be repeated many times - each time the learning grows. They are challenged to be effective team members under pressure. They must perceive cultural differences even though it seems clear that their own culture is the only one that matters. They will supervise someone who doesn't want to learn. And they will learn quickly by successfully doing it.
