10 Ways to Improve Your Leadership
As a leader of an organisation, and/or a business owner, understanding what you need to do as a leader in today's world is a great start to improving your results. In this article I would like to share with you the ten areas of leadership that I believe we need to focus on to be successful ... a leadership blueprint if you like.
We live in a context of fantastic opportunities; and leadership is the vital component that creates an agile high performance business where we can make the most of them!
However, our times also lead to foggy situations. One of the challenges we face is that the rules for leadership have be rewritten and it has become unclear how to lead effectively in our opportunistic and foggy times. So what do great business owners and leaders need to do in today's world? Here are my top ten tips ...
# ONE - We need to understand that our role as a leader is to CREATE A HIGH PERFORMANCE BUSINESS WHERE SUCCESS IS INEVITABLE.
#TWO - Combined to the role we need to realise that the purpose of leadership is to AWAKEN POSSIBILITY IN OUR PEOPLE TO DELIVER EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS. We need to operate in collaborative and inclusive ways that deliver results with people.
#THREE - We also need to operate with three guiding principles: BOLDNESS, SIMPLICITY AND SPEED.
We then need to live what I call the 7 LEADERSHIP TRUTHS.
#FOUR - We need to strive to be 100% AUTHENTIC. We need to understand ourselves and have a story to tell, we must have an authentic leadership brand, build on our strengths, happy being vulnerable, be ourselves, share our leadership philosophy, build trust, be positive, healthy, fit and happy.
#FIVE - We need to INSPIRE ACTION. Purpose must be at the heart of everything we do, we need to make a difference, have courage, go out on a limb, be bold, tell stories and give examples that give meaning and inspire action. We must create a sense of real value.
#SIX - We must CREATE HIGH PERFORMANCE TEAMS. We need to be comfortable with collaboration, empowerment, autonomy and know how to build teams quickly.
#SEVEN - We need to UNLEASH INNOVATION. We need to know how to create a culture where everyone comes up with great ideas to improve performance and add value. We need to innovate in every aspect of our business. We are relentless discoverers. We exploit technology and platforms.
#EIGHT - We must MANAGE AMBIGUITY AND KILL RISK. We need to be comfortable with paradoxes, make the complex simple, understand the need for evolving plans and be agile. We need to be mentally tough and resilient to deal with a world in perpetual crisis. We must anticipate and kill risk quickly. We need to stay in touch with the real world.
#NINE - We need to EDUCATE. We should help people and our business to learn, inspire curiosity, only tell when direction is absolutely needed, ensure learning is applied, lead with questions, coach, develop our teams and nurture capability.
#TEN - And finally we must DELIVER WITH PACE. We need to translate strategy into meaning and inspire action, join the dots, be comfortable speeding up by slowing down, deliver through people and teams, and execute.
